Denim & Jeans

Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

An oversized striped sweater with dropped shoulders — two relaxing forces working together, since the dropped seam and the extra room both push the silhouette away from the body. Five colors: brown, khaki, black, red, and orange-red.

How oversized is oversized

The bust runs 51.2" on the small up to 56.7" on the extra large, with a body length of 24.4" to 26.2". That's around a foot more room across the chest than a standard sweater in the same size.

Take your usual size for the intended look. Sizing up adds width rather than length.

Dropped shoulder plus oversized

These two features often get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. Oversized adds width through the body. A dropped shoulder moves the sleeve seam down the arm so nothing pulls when you move. Together they produce the slouchy, fall-off-one-shoulder line that a merely large sweater doesn't quite achieve.

The sleeves are correspondingly short at 17.7" to 18.9" — measured from the dropped seam rather than the shoulder point, which is why the number looks small.

Before you order

How oversized is it? Meaningfully. Take your usual size — sizing up makes it wider rather than longer.

Which color first? Brown and khaki go with the most. Orange-red and red are the ones that become the outfit.

Will it lose its shape? Fold rather than hang, and wash cold. Oversized knits are heavier, and a hanger concentrates all that weight on the shoulders.
