Denim & Jeans

Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Sizing: go by the measurements, not the letter

These run smaller than US sizing. The size S has a 26-inch waist, where a typical US small sits closer to 27 or 28. Across the range the waist only reaches 32.3 inches at XL.

So compare your own measurements to the chart below rather than ordering your usual letter size. For most people that means going up one size from what they'd normally buy — and if you're between two, take the larger, because the denim is printed and distressed rather than heavily stretchy.

Print and distressing together

Floral print on denim is soft; distressing is rough. Putting both on one pair is what keeps them from tipping either way — the print stops the fraying reading as purely grungy, and the distressing stops the florals reading as sweet.

These measurements were taken by hand from the garment and may vary by roughly 0.4 to 1.2 inches.

How to wear them

A plain graphic tee or a fitted tank, tucked in.
A heel or platform — a 31-inch inseam on a flare is cut to fall over one.
Nothing patterned on top. The jeans are the print.
A belt, since the loops are there.

Good to know

Which measurement should I fit to? Hip first, then waist. The hip runs 35.8" at S to 42.1" at XL, and that's where a flare is decided — the leg opens up below it either way.

Will the distressing spread? A little at first, then it settles. Wash inside out on cold to slow it down.

Flare or wide leg? Flare — fitted through the thigh and knee, opening below. If you want volume from the hip down, a wide leg is the other shape.
