Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Why the drawstring matters here

You set the waist. Waist measurements run 30.7" to 40.2" across the range, and the tie takes up slack without a trip to the tailor.
Real room through the hip. 48" at 0XL up to 57.5" at 4XL.
Pockets. Not the decorative kind.
The plaid does the work. A pattern this graphic means the rest of the outfit can be plain and still look considered.

Fabric and fit

100% polyester, which holds the plaid crisp and resists the creasing a woven cotton would pick up by lunchtime. Length runs 40.6" at 0XL to 42.1" at 4XL. Go by your hip measurement rather than the size label — the chart below is far more reliable than guessing, since plus sizing varies wildly between brands.

How to wear it

With a plain black top, so the plaid stays the focal point.
A fitted knit, tucked in, sleeves pushed up.
Under a long solid cardigan or blazer, for a column of one color either side of the pattern.

Good to know

How does 0XL compare to a standard size? Sizing starts at 0XL and runs to 4XL. Measure your natural waist and the fullest part of your hip, then match both to the chart — brand-to-brand plus sizing varies too much to guess from a label.

Does polyester breathe? Less than cotton. In high summer these will feel warmer than a cotton pant. The trade-off is that they hold their shape and come out of a suitcase ready to wear.

Can they be hemmed? Yes. A straight wide leg is one of the easier shapes to shorten if the length isn't right for you.
