Denim & Jeans

Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Flare leg jeans in a washed medium denim, with a pocket design that does more than hold your keys. Fitted through the waist and thigh, then opening out from the knee down.

These are 75% cotton

Worth saying first, because it's the thing that separates a real pair of jeans from a denim-look trouser. Three quarters cotton with 2% elastane means they break in, soften with wear, and hold a crease where you sit — the way denim is supposed to behave — while still having enough give to be comfortable through a full day.

The washed finish means that softening process has already started before they reach you.

Flare versus wide leg

These are not the same thing, and the measurements prove it. The hip here runs 36.4" at a size 4 — several inches narrower than a wide-leg jean in the same size, because a flare is cut close through the hip and thigh and only widens below the knee.

That means a flare follows your shape rather than concealing it, and it needs a shoe with some height, because the widening is calculated to fall over one. If you've tried wide-legs and found them shapeless, a flare is usually the answer.

How to wear them

With a heel or a platform. A flare hem is cut to fall over a raised shoe and looks wrong scraping the floor over a flat.
A fitted or tucked top — the volume belongs at the hem, not the waist.
A cropped jacket to keep the line from knee to floor uninterrupted.
Boots underneath in winter, with the flare falling over the shaft.

Before you order

Do I need heels? Not strictly, but the shape is designed around them. If you live in flats, a wide leg will serve you better than a flare.

How do the numeric sizes run? US numeric, 4 to 16. Fit the hip first — on a flare that's the tightest point, and it runs 36.4" to 44.3" across the range.

Are they fitted through the thigh? Yes. That's what makes it a flare rather than a bootcut or a wide leg.
