Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Why the drawstring is the point

A structured waistband fits one measurement. A drawstring fits a range — which matters more than it sounds, because it means the same pair works on a normal day and on a day when a fixed waistband would be the first thing you wanted to take off. It's also what lets you decide whether they sit high or a little lower.

These measurements were taken by hand from the garment and may vary by roughly 0.4 to 1.2 inches.

Good to know

Where does the waist sit? Partly up to you — a drawstring lets you wear it at the natural waist or slightly below, depending on how you tie it. The waist measures 26" at S up to 34.6" at 2XL.

Will they be too long? Bottom length runs 39.8" to 41.3", cut for a full-length line. If you're petite, plan on a raised shoe or a quick hem.

Do they work for travel? A pull-on wide leg with no hardware at the waist is close to ideal for a long flight.
