5 Tried-and-True Ways to Hide Your Belly in Clothing

If you’re embarrassed by your belly or love handles, you’re not alone! Many women wish they could get rid of their bellies, but few know how to actually do it. Fortunately, there are some tricks that can help you hide your belly when wearing clothes, and they don’t require you to have any special skills or equipment. Read on to learn how to cover up your belly in clothing with these five tried-and-true tips!

Wear higher waisted bottoms

A great way to help hide your belly is by wearing bottoms that sit higher on your waist. This will help create the illusion of a smaller waist and can be very flattering. Plus, it's a great way to show off your curves! Here are a few of our favorite high-waisted bottoms Tallulah Solitaire High Waist Jeans ($38) - these jeans sit just below the natural waistline so they work well for most body types. The stretchy fabric hugs you in all the right places while keeping your tummy hidden.
Lush Front Slit Pant ($55) - these classic cropped pants have been around for years and for good reason - they're easy to wear with anything from a tunic top to a dress. They taper at the ankle which elongates your legs. The high-rise waistline creates a more narrow silhouette. Ruffle Waist Pants ($29) - we love these bootcut pants because they skim over any bulges without adding bulk to your middle. They also look great paired with a tunic or sweater. They hit about an inch above the ankle which makes them super versatile as they can easily be dressed up or down depending on where you're headed next.

Choose tops with waist definition

A defined waist is always going to be more slimming than a loose, shapeless top. If you don't have a lot of definition in your waist, choose tops that cinch or tie at the smallest part of your frame. This will give the illusion of a smaller waist and make your overall silhouette look more hourglass-shaped. Invest in some well-fitting jeans: Most people say to buy jeans one size down from what you would normally wear. However, this isn't as easy for everyone because not everyone has a proportional body type. Buy two pairs of jeans: One size down and one size up from what you would normally wear. The higher-waisted pair should fit well when fastened on the middle button, while the lower-waisted pair should fit comfortably when fastened on the last button. In addition to buying new clothes, try different hairstyles: ponytails can also help hide a belly while keeping hair out of your face. For women with curly hair, wearing it up in a bun or braid will keep it neat and out of the way. For those with straight hair, try using dry shampoo to add volume near your roots so that the weight of your hair pulls away from your neckline. Wear bright colors: Choose colors like reds, oranges, pinks and purples which are generally associated with springtime and flowers - think peonies! These colors are known to promote joy which can help anyone feel more confident about their appearance.

Wear vertical stripes

Wearing vertical stripes is a great way to divert attention away from your midsection. Not only do they help create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette, but they also make you look taller and more put together. If you're self-conscious about your belly, reach for a top or dress with vertical stripes the next time you get dressed. You'll be happy you did! The idea is that if it's not obvious where your tummy stops and the rest of you begins, people will focus on other things like what color your outfit is, what pattern it has, how well it fits, etc. Another option: layer one pattern over another so there's no break in color at the waistline. Nowadays, many brands are designing clothes with bigger armholes and smaller necklines to avoid revealing any extra skin. Don't forget to pair these pieces with high-waisted bottoms for maximum coverage!
It can be helpful to find pieces that offer a little bit of breathing room around the stomach area (rather than being fitted).

Choose flowy outfits

One of the best ways to camouflage your stomach is by wearing clothing that drapes over your body and doesn’t cling too closely to any one area. Flowy dresses, skirts, and tops are all great options. If you want something a little more structured, look for pieces with strategic ruching or draping. You can also try undergarments like spanx to suck everything in. And if you’re feeling really daring, invest in a dress designed specifically for hiding bumps – they can make all the difference! They're perfect for when you need to be showing off some leg but still don't want people staring at your belly. We love this maxi from MINKPINK. The empire waist hits just below the bust line, and it's made from a light linen fabric so it's breathable and easy to wear in warm weather. Plus, we love the gorgeous lace detail on this piece.
The key is finding clothes that will make you feel confident without drawing too much attention to your tummy - these tricks should help you find what works for you!

Find tops with a built-in cincher or belt

A great way to immediately slim your silhouette is by finding tops with a built-in cincher or belt. This will help create the illusion of a smaller waist and can be easily dressed up or down. Some of our favorite places to find these tops are Zara, H&M, and Forever 21.
Wear light colors on top (two sentences): Wearing light colors on top will also help give the illusion of a smaller waist. In addition, you should make sure that the color of your shirt contrasts with the color of your jeans. Lastly, keep both pieces fitted so that they hug your body instead of hanging loosely from it. Avoid going for any pleats and tucks because these will add extra volume around your midsection. Instead, opt for straight styles which will help create a slimmer look. The key to choosing the right style is choosing one that has seams at your side where they won't accentuate your stomach. These types of clothes will provide some coverage while still giving off a dressy vibe. If you have long hair, try styling it over one shoulder and draping it across one side of your stomach as this will draw attention away from the area.
