    Women's Winter Coats

    Real winter needs a real coat. This collection of women's winter coats runs to 73 styles — longline and double-breasted, trench coats, teddy and sherpa, quilted, plaid and hooded. The three things that decide whether a coat works are length, hood and shell; everything else is preference.

    Length Decides Warmth More Than Fill Does

    A knee-length or longline coat keeps the thigh covered, which is where most heat goes standing at a bus stop. A cropped style looks sharper and works down to about freezing, but stops being enough below that. If you commute on foot, buy the length. Most of what is here is longline for exactly that reason.

    Which Winter Coat to Choose

    A trench coat is the three-season option — belted, water-resistant, and the one that layers over work clothes without bulk. A teddy or sherpa coat is the warmest per ounce and the most casual; it is the one that gets worn on the school run. A quilted style packs down and handles wind. Double-breasted is the most formal cut here and the one that reads tailored. Hooded versions of several are in the range if you want rain covered too.

    Closures Matter More Than People Expect

    A double-breasted front blocks wind at the chest in a way a single row of buttons does not. A belt or drawstring waist stops a longline coat from becoming a tunnel. A zip is faster and warmer than buttons; buttons look better open. If you are buying one coat to do everything, take a belted longline with a hood.

    Buy Ahead of the Season

    Coat ranges are deepest in late summer and early autumn and thin out badly by December, when the styles left are the ones nobody wanted. If you already know you need one, now is a better time to look than November.
