Dressing for a Special Occasion as an Extra Large Woman

If you’re an extra large woman, the wardrobe choices you have can seem pretty limited. The typical options are often too short or too tight, and very few stores carry things in your size. But this doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with your wardrobe from high school, when your body was entirely different! With these eight tips on how to dress well as an extra large woman, you can look fabulous and feel confident no matter what the occasion calls for. Just follow these steps and shop smart, and you’ll be sure to look your best at any event!

The right length

Maxi dresses are flattering on any woman. They’re especially ideal for those of us with long torsos who need more fabric to make up for our lack of height. The added benefit is that they often come in gorgeous prints and rich colors, making them perfect candidates for special occasion dresses. As you might imagine, finding maxi dresses in larger sizes can be challenging; however, there are some online retailers that cater specifically to plus-size women and have plenty of maxis available. Some even offer free shipping! If you prefer brick-and-mortar shopping, check out department stores like Macy’s or Dillard’s—or head to a specialty store like Lane Bryant or Torrid. You may also want to ask your local boutique if they carry anything similar. Most importantly, don’t let your size intimidate you from trying new styles and silhouettes! A little confidence goes a long way when it comes to dressing well.

Fabrics

When you’re an extra large woman, you have few wardrobe choices. Many maxi dresses and special occasion dresses are simply not made in sizes bigger than XL. But fortunately, there are still plenty of styles available to accommodate your body type; shopping online and reading reviews on third-party sites is key. Because of their cut, maxi dresses lend themselves to women with curves. They look great when paired with strappy heels and a statement necklace. If you can find one that flatters your figure, a special occasion dress will be perfect for any formal event or holiday party. Just keep in mind that these types of dresses often come with spaghetti straps, so if you don’t want to show off too much skin, opt for a cardigan or bolero jacket instead. Don’t forget about accessories! Even though they aren’t always necessary, they can make all the difference in how you feel while wearing a special occasion dress. Try some dangly earrings or a bold bracelet to add some flair to your outfit. And remember: It doesn’t matter what size you wear—you deserve to feel beautiful every day! So go ahead and buy yourself something pretty! The best part about special occasion dresses is that they can easily transition from daytime to nighttime. If you know it’s going to be a busy evening, take along a small clutch bag or pair of flats. You’ll look great from start to finish without worrying about changing outfits during your night out! (Just avoid ordering appetizers at dinner.)

Style tips

Maxi dresses are perfect because they are very versatile, much like you! From work events to date nights, they will always make sure you look stylish and feel confident. You can easily get creative with accessorizing too. Pick out your favorite necklace or belt to spice up any maxi dress in your closet. You’ll also want to check out plus size shops that specialize in special occasion dresses. They have many options for every event including formal dances, weddings, proms and more. They usually carry styles that range from modest to extremely sexy so you can find something that suits your taste perfectly. It is important to remember not all special occasion dresses are created equal when it comes to fit and style but if you find one that fits well it is worth investing in.
Finally remember confidence is key when wearing any outfit no matter what size you wear so rock those outfits with pride! If someone has something negative to say about your dress or body just ignore them and continue being fabulous. After all, they are missing out on how great you look.

Fit issues

Many women struggle with finding dresses that fit them well and flatter their figure. Dresses are often made for women with smaller figures, so we wanted to share some of our tips on how to select maxi dresses and special occasion dresses that make you look great! First, try shopping online; many brands have extended sizes available online only. Second, pick a style that flatters your body type—draping or empire-waist styles can help create curves where there aren’t any. Third, find out if there is room in your budget to have clothing tailored; many off-the-rack items can be altered by your local tailor to give you a perfect fit. And finally, don’t forget about accessories! A beautiful necklace or earrings can draw attention away from areas of your body you may not like. Our favorite places to shop for affordable plus size formal wear include Simply Be and Avenue. Both companies offer collections designed specifically for plus size customers, and they both offer free shipping worldwide. If you prefer to shop at brick-and-mortar stores, check out David’s Bridal for stylish options. If you need more ideas, ask friends and family members who would be willing to lend a hand (or eyes). It never hurts to ask around before heading into a dressing room! Whatever you do, don’t underestimate yourself: If it makes you feel good, then it looks good! Don’t let anything hold you back from wearing something that makes you feel fabulous. You deserve it!
We want to thank all of our guests and wish them luck on their interviews and success in their future endeavors.

Comfortable shoes

The first step to looking great is feeling comfortable. Don’t wear shoes that squeeze your toes or pinch your feet, because you will never feel comfortable and confident when wearing them. It can be difficult to find fashionable plus-size shoes in larger sizes, but there are some options out there for you if you look around. I recommend going to stores that specialize in plus-size fashion, such as Lane Bryant and Torrid. If you don’t have access to these types of stores near you, try searching online. Online retailers like Dillard’s and Nordstrom offer a wide selection of stylish plus-size footwear for reasonable prices. You might also want to ask your friends if they know where you can buy good quality shoes at affordable prices; most women who wear size 14+ clothing probably have their own recommendations on where to shop! Regardless of where you choose to purchase your shoes, make sure they fit properly and that you’re able to walk comfortably in them before buying. Some people think it looks cute to wear high heels all day long, but wearing uncomfortable shoes just makes it more likely that you will suffer from foot pain by the end of the day. That being said, if you do decide to wear heels, then go ahead and rock those stilettos with confidence! Just remember to take off your shoes every once in a while so that you can give your feet a break.

Accessories

The key to making any outfit work? Accent pieces. An oversize necklace can draw attention to your smallest point and balance out your figure; designer sunglasses can add glamour. If you’re headed to a party, carry a stylish bag that reflects your outfit. You want to look polished, not pulled together at all costs (that’s what sweatpants are for). In fact, if you have a special occasion coming up and don’t know where to start with your wardrobe, ask yourself: What accessory would really make my outfit pop? Then go shopping! Even something small like earrings or a belt can take your getup from good to great. And since we all love saving money, here’s another pro tip: Invest in one statement piece that you wear frequently and then fill in around it with cheaper versions of other items in your closet. Want to stand out from the crowd? Wear something no one else has. It doesn’t matter how much you spent on it—if everyone else is wearing red, choose blue instead. Or vice versa. Be bold! The more confident you feel, the more people will notice and admire your sense of style. Remember: When people compliment you on an item of clothing, thank them graciously but explain that it was just five dollars at Forever 21! They’ll be so impressed by your self-confidence that they won’t even care about whatever label was sewn into your shirt. Plus, when someone compliments you on a handbag or shoes, tell them exactly where you got it. Don’t be afraid to show off your hard work!

What to wear under your outfit

It’s not enough to just find one cute outfit; you need to plan everything from your shoes to your accessories. I highly recommend getting several pairs of special occasion shoes in all styles (ie pumps, flats, heels, etc) so that you can use them again and again. Shoes don’t have to be expensive (I buy my pumps at DSW), but they do have to go with other items in your closet so that they are useful. Your shoes are worth spending money on! Don’t forget socks or hosiery either. If you want to splurge, get some great quality ones that will last longer than cheaper ones. In addition to shoes and socks/hosiery, think about jewelry, belts/sashes/scarves/etc., handbags and clutches. Remember: when it comes to clothes shopping online or in stores, it pays off big time if you shop sales and clearance racks! I also like to keep track of all my purchases in a spreadsheet so that I know what I already own and what new things I need. Finally, remember that even though you may be larger than average size, there is no reason why you cannot look fashionable! Just make sure your clothes fit well, complement each other and coordinate with shoes/accessories. Also consider wearing darker colors which tend to hide imperfections better. For example, black pants will always look good and never show lumps or bumps. As long as you feel confident in what you wear, your outer appearance will reflect that confidence. Good luck!
