Cardigan, Crew or V-Neck
A cardigan is the one that comes off without ruining the outfit underneath, which is why it outwears every pullover in a wardrobe with central heating. A crew neck is the cleanest line and the best base under a coat. A V-neck opens the neckline and layers over a collared shirt without the two collars fighting. If you are buying one sweater to do the most, take the cardigan.
Oversized and Dropped-Shoulder Knits
The oversized end of this collection is deeper than it looks — chunky knits, striped drop-shoulder pullovers, two-tone textured V-necks and oversized crew necks. The rule with volume is to keep one half of the outfit narrow: an oversized sweater over a slim jean or a fitted skirt reads deliberate, over a wide-leg trouser it reads like laundry day.
Stitch and Gauge
The stitch decides how a plain-colored sweater looks. A cable knit carries its own texture and needs nothing else going on. An open or loose knit is lighter and layers over a cami or tee, which makes it a three-season piece rather than a winter one. A flat, fine knit is the most formal and the easiest to wear under a blazer. Gauge — how tight the knit is — matters more for warmth than the fiber name on the label.
Oversized or True to Size
Knitwear gives, so sizing is more forgiving here than in a woven. Take your usual size for a close fit; size up if you want to layer underneath or want the slouchy line. Measurements for each size are in the size chart.
Making a Sweater Last
Fold, do not hang. A knit on a hanger pulls down at the shoulder seam over a season and never recovers. Wash cool and reshape flat to dry. A fabric shaver takes pills off in minutes and is the difference between a sweater lasting two winters and five.
