Denim & Jeans

Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

A polka dot sweatshirt with dropped shoulders, in caramel or blush pink. Two soft, warm colors rather than the usual grey marl — which is most of why this doesn't look like a gym sweatshirt.

It is properly oversized

The bust measures 48.2" on the small and 56.1" on the extra large, with a body length of 26.8" to 29.1". A standard sweatshirt in a small sits closer to 40", so this is a big, slouchy garment at every size.

Take your usual size for the intended look. Sizing up adds width, not length — and there is already a great deal of width.

Polka dots on a sweatshirt

Sweatshirts are almost always plain, because the shape is casual enough that most people don't add to it. A dot pattern changes the register: it borrows something from a blouse and puts it on a garment cut for comfort, so the result works with jeans on a Saturday and doesn't look out of place at a school pickup or a coffee meeting.

Caramel and blush do the rest. Both are warm neutrals, so the dots read as a pattern rather than as novelty.
