Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Wide-leg jeans with a snap placket running down the side of the leg — and every one of those snaps actually opens. Blue denim, 31-inch inseam, sizes S through XL.

The snaps are functional, which is the point

Decorative snaps are common. Functional ones are not, and they change what the jeans do: open a few at the ankle and the leg falls differently over a boot; open more and you get a side split that shows whatever is underneath. Closed, it reads as a clean side stripe running the full length of the leg.

That vertical line is doing quiet work too. A stripe down the outside seam is the oldest trick for making a leg look longer, which is why it turns up on everything from tuxedo trousers to track pants.

Good to know

How long is a 31-inch inseam? Full length on most heights — it'll break over a shoe rather than sit at the ankle. Under about 5'4", plan on a heel or a hem.

Will the snaps come undone on their own? Functional snaps are made to hold. Give them a press along the placket after washing.

Are they stretchy? The listing doesn't specify, so treat them as standard denim and size accordingly.
