Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

What a paperbag waist actually does

The fabric gathers above the waistline and stands up in a small ruffle, like the top of a paper bag — hence the name. Two things follow from that. It draws the eye to the narrowest part of your waist, and because the gathering is elasticated, it fits a range of measurements rather than one. The drawstring then lets you decide exactly how tight.

It's the reason these are more forgiving than a flat-front short, and the reason they look put-together rather than casual.

How do I size a drawstring short? The waist adjusts, so fit is decided at the hip. These are cut full and flowy through the leg rather than close, so they run generous.
