Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Polka Dot Mermaid Maxi Skirt

A polka dot maxi skirt cut in a mermaid line — close through the hip and thigh, then opening into a ruffle at the hem. Ruched detail down the body, a concealed zip, and three color ways: white, black, and navy blue.

What a mermaid skirt actually does

The shape follows the body from waist to knee and then flares. That's the whole trick: it holds a line where a full skirt would add volume, and then releases into movement exactly where you walk. It's the most deliberately shaped skirt silhouette there is, and it's why this one reads as an outfit rather than a separate.

The ruching down the body works with it — gathered fabric follows a curve rather than pulling flat across it.

Maxi length — about 41" to 42.5" from the waist, so it reaches the ankle on most heights.

Fit notes

This is a fitted silhouette, so the measurements matter more than they would on a loose skirt. The hip runs about 35.8" at the small up to 44.5" at the XXL, and the waist 26.8" to 35.4". Size to your hip — that's where a mermaid skirt is decided, and there's no ease built in to absorb a difference.

How to wear it

With a fitted top tucked in — the shape needs a clean waist to read properly.
A cropped knit, so the ruching stays visible.
A heel. A mermaid hem is cut with one in mind, and flats will make the hem drag.
Black with a black top for a full column; the white one against a tan.

Before you order

Is it lined? No. On a fitted skirt that's worth planning for, especially in the white — seamless underwear or a half slip, and you won't think about it again.

Can I walk normally in it? Yes. The ruffle at the hem exists precisely so a fitted maxi doesn't restrict your stride.

Should I size up? Only if you want it skimming rather than fitted. The silhouette is designed to follow the body; sizing up loses the line.
