Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

A floral print dress in a vintage register — the softer, smaller-scale, slightly faded kind of floral rather than a bright modern one — with three-quarter sleeves, frill detail, and pockets.

It's shorter than it looks

Worth knowing before it arrives: the length runs 35" to 36.6" from the shoulder, which lands above the knee on most heights. It's cut as a short dress, not a midi.

If you'd rather have more coverage it works over slim jeans or with opaque tights, both of which suit the vintage-floral look anyway.

The case for a three-quarter sleeve

It's the most useful sleeve length and the least discussed. A short sleeve leaves you cold in air conditioning. A long sleeve gets in the way and needs pushing up. A three-quarter sleeve stops at the narrowest part of the forearm, which means it stays where you put it, keeps your wrists free, and shows a watch or a bracelet.

It's also the length that reads as deliberate rather than seasonal — this dress works in April and October equally.

Good to know

Is there any stretch? None. Size by the bust measurement in the chart rather than expecting it to give.

Is it lined? No. A slip underneath is worth having with a light floral.

Will the print fade? Wash inside out, cold, and dry out of direct sun. Vintage-style prints are softer to begin with, so they show fading sooner than a saturated one.
