Denim is sized by waist. Many of the brands we carry — including Judy Blue, RISEN and KanCan — label sizes as a number followed by the waist measurement, for example 7(28).

Tummy-control denim: Styles with a tummy-control waistband run more generous than standard denim. If you are between sizes in these, size down — the compression panel adds structure and takes up the extra room.

How to Measure

Use a soft tape measure over your underwear, not over clothing. Keep the tape level and snug, but not tight enough to compress.

Bust — measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back.
Waist — measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Don't hold your breath.
Hip — stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
Inseam — measure from the top of your inner thigh down to where you want the hem to fall, in the shoes you plan to wear.

Still Between Sizes?

If you land between two sizes, the fabric decides it:

Woven, non-stretch (most shirts, blazers, structured dresses) — size up.
Heavy stretch (leggings, ponte, tummy-control denim) — size down.
Oversized or relaxed styles — take your usual size; the extra room is already built in.

Wide-Leg Drawstring Jeans

Wide-leg jeans with a drawstring waist instead of the usual zip and button — denim that behaves like a pull-on pant.

Washed cotton with applique detail, in a dark wash and a mid blue, cut full length through a wide straight leg.

Why the drawstring changes things

No waistband digging in. You tie it where it's comfortable and it stays there, which is the whole appeal of pull-on denim.
Forgiving between sizes. The tie absorbs a couple of inches of waist either way — useful when your waist and hip don't agree on a size.
Applique detail so they don't read as plain jeans from the back.
Washed finish rather than raw, stiff indigo.
Sizes S through 2XL, waist 28.3" to 37".

Fabric and fit

95% cotton with 5% spandex, listed by the supplier as non-stretch denim — so choose your size on measurements rather than counting on it to give. Hip runs 40.9" at S to 49.6" at 2XL, and total length 41.3" to 42.9", which puts them at full length on most heights rather than cropped. Fit the hip first; the drawstring will handle the waist.

What to wear with them

A fitted or cropped top — the volume is all below the waist, so keep it narrow above.
A tucked-in tee with the drawstring tied in a small bow at the front.
Sneakers for daytime, a heel to lengthen the line if the hem is pooling.

Good to know

Is the drawstring the only closure? Yes — there's no zip or button fly. That's what makes them pull on, and it's also why the waist has some flexibility built in.

Do they stretch out through the day? Non-stretch cotton denim relaxes a little with wear and comes back in the wash. If they feel snug at the hip when new, they will not become a size larger.

Can I shorten them? A straight wide leg hems easily. Have it done with the shoes you'll actually wear them with on.
